Petulant former President Donald Trump has decided to halt all trade negotiations with Canada, citing his objection to television advertisements. Trump expressed his disapproval, claiming that the ads displayed “egregious behavior” aimed at influencing US court decisions and opposing tariffs. Trade tensions between the US and Canada have been escalating for months, and Trump’s sudden decision to terminate negotiations is expected to escalate the situation further.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump, aged 79, alleged that Canada fraudulently used an advertisement featuring Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about tariffs to sway court decisions. He emphasized the importance of tariffs to the national security and economy of the USA. Consequently, Trump declared the termination of all trade negotiations with Canada due to their “egregious behavior.”
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney previously stated his intent to double his country’s exports to nations outside the US in response to the threat posed by Trump’s tariffs. However, Carney’s office has not yet responded to requests for comment as the Prime Minister is currently attending a summit in Asia, while Trump is also engaged in official duties.
The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute recently denounced an ad by the government of Ontario, stating that it misrepresents Reagan’s remarks on free and fair trade. The foundation is considering legal actions regarding the unauthorized use of Reagan’s address in the advertisement.
Despite a meeting between Trump and Carney to alleviate trade tensions earlier this month, the relationship between the two countries remains strained. The impending review of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, a trade deal negotiated by Trump in his first term, adds further complexity to the situation. With over three-quarters of Canadian exports going to the US, the impact of trade disruptions is significant, as billions of dollars’ worth of goods and services cross the border daily.
Trump criticized the Canadian advertisement for highlighting the impact of his tariffs, suggesting that Canada was justified in running such ads. Meanwhile, Ontario Premier Doug Ford shared the Ontario government’s new advertising campaign in the US, advocating against American tariffs on Canada and emphasizing the importance of collaboration for prosperity.
