A thrill-seeking extreme sports enthusiast tragically lost his life in Turkey while engaging in speed flying activities. Vyacheslav Gribanov, aged 37, met a fatal end when he crashed into rocks on Babadag mountain after launching from a height of nearly 6,000 feet. This incident marks the third fatality in recent weeks in the region among those participating in free flying adventures along the Turkish Riviera.
Gribanov, an experienced paraglider who had recently transitioned to speed flying, encountered a fatal mishap during a solo flight as he reportedly lost control shortly after takeoff, leading to his untimely demise. The sport of speed flying, characterized by rapid descents near the ground utilizing a compact, high-performance wing, entails significant risks with participants reaching speeds of up to 95mph in close proximity to the terrain.
Following the tragic accident, efforts are underway to retrieve Gribanov’s lost camera in order to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash. The deceased, who operated a construction company in St Petersburg, Russia, had been undergoing training with an instructor to enhance his skills in speed flying. Reports also mention the deaths of a German tourist in a flying incident and a Polish individual as a passenger during a descent, labeling the series of fatalities as “unusual.”
In a separate event back in July, another extreme sports influencer, Andreas Tonelli, met a similar fate after a biking accident led to his fall of 600 feet into a ravine in the Dolomites region of Italy. Tonelli, aged 48, known for his daring mountain biking expeditions shared on Instagram, tragically perished in the Vallunga area of Val Gardena. His body was discovered after a search operation and it is believed that the fatal fall resulted from the bicycle mishap he encountered.
Tonelli’s passion for adventure and travel was evident in his social media presence, where he expressed fondness for exploring various destinations worldwide. With a history of organizing biking expeditions across Italy, Europe, and beyond, Mr. Tonelli was an avid photographer, hiker, and climber who showcased his ventures to a wide audience. His notable achievements included conquering challenging routes such as the L’Onda di Hokusai in the Dolomites and scaling the Tupungato volcano in central Chile.
