Two brothers aged one and two tragically drowned in a First Nation community within the Island Lake area of eastern Manitoba, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The incident was reported to the police on Wednesday when the children were taken to the Garden Hill Anisininew Nation’s nursing station around 2 p.m. after being found in a nearby lake by a family member.
Despite efforts to save them, the toddlers were pronounced dead at the nursing station. Authorities believe the boys wandered away from their home and entered the lake, with no suspicion of foul play. The community, including neighboring areas, has come together to support the grieving family during this difficult time.
Alex McDougall, the grand chief of Anisininew Okimawin representing the Island Lake region’s First Nations, expressed condolences and mentioned that preventative measures, such as a fence, had been put in place to restrict access to the water. The tragic incident occurred in Garden Hill, approximately 475 kilometers northeast of Winnipeg.
Notably, this marks one of the five drowning incidents reported in Manitoba in 2026, as confirmed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Island Lake RCMP Sgt. Chris Hipolito acknowledged the challenges faced by the family and the community, offering RCMP support services to help them through the grieving process. He emphasized the importance of allowing them to mourn and cope in their own ways.
