A tragic incident unfolded when a teenager in Sydney, Australia, became paralyzed and eventually lost his life after consuming a slug as part of a dare during a birthday celebration. The young rugby player, Sam Ballard, ingested the slug at a friend’s gathering, unaware that it carried a dangerous parasite known as the rat lungworm disease.
Initially feeling no ill effects, Sam later experienced severe leg pains, prompting concerns about the slug consumption. Despite his worries, his mother reassured him that such an act wouldn’t cause harm. However, Sam eventually developed a brain infection, leading to a 420-day coma upon which he awoke paralyzed from the neck down. He faced numerous health complications, including seizures, temperature regulation issues, and the need for tube feeding. Tragically, Sam passed away at the age of 28 in 2018, with his family and friends by his side.
