“Stellantis Considers Closure, Sale of Brampton Plant”

Published:

Stellantis is reportedly contemplating the closure and potential sale of the Brampton Assembly Plant, according to a communication received by the national union. Unifor’s president, Lana Payne, disclosed that while Stellantis has hinted at discussions with another entity regarding the plant’s sale, it has not officially notified the union in writing, as stipulated in the collective agreement.

Expressing disappointment, Payne emphasized the importance of Stellantis adhering to the one-year notice requirement for any closure or sale. The company’s decision to halt the retooling process for Jeep Compass production in Brampton and relocate it to the U.S. has raised concerns among union members about the loss of high-paying jobs with longstanding benefits.

Stellantis, in response, stated that it is gearing up for collective bargaining and refrained from making any immediate announcements. Payne reiterated Unifor’s commitment to addressing this issue in upcoming negotiations, emphasizing the significance of protecting union jobs and sustaining auto manufacturing in Canada.

Despite the uncertainties surrounding the Brampton plant, Unifor remains steadfast in advocating for the preservation of jobs and the revitalization of vehicle production in the region. Vito Beato, president of Unifor Local 1285, underscored the critical role of these jobs in the community and expressed optimism about finding solutions during bargaining discussions.

Unifor, which represents approximately 2,200 members at the Brampton facility, highlighted that workers are currently receiving income security during the plant’s idle period. The union’s efforts to secure a favorable outcome for the plant align with the City of Brampton’s commitment to safeguarding automotive manufacturing in the area and ensuring the return of workers to the plant.

Government officials have also been actively engaged in safeguarding the plant’s operations and jobs, with ongoing discussions involving various stakeholders to facilitate long-term investments and job protection in Canada.
