“Starmer Backs Probe Into Prince Andrew’s Rent-Free Mansion Stay”

Published:

Keir Starmer has expressed support for an investigation into Prince Andrew’s rent-free stay at a 30-room mansion in Windsor.

The Prime Minister emphasized the need for thorough scrutiny following calls for a parliamentary inquiry that could potentially involve the Prince providing testimony.

Concerns have been raised regarding the arrangement allowing Andrew to reside at Royal Lodge, a historic Georgian mansion in Windsor Great Park. Initially purchasing a 75-year lease for £1 million, he now pays a symbolic peppercorn rent.

Recent attention on Andrew’s ties to Jeffrey Epstein has intensified, prompting him to renounce his titles. Despite continued denial of accusations, allegations from Virginia Giuffre’s posthumous memoir have brought the issue to the forefront.

During discussions at PMQs, Liberal Democrats leader Sir Ed Davey urged scrutiny of the Crown Estate to safeguard taxpayer interests, proposing a select committee inquiry to summon involved parties for evidence.

In response, Mr. Starmer stressed the importance of scrutinizing all Crown properties and voiced support for thorough examination.

A review of the lease agreement for Royal Lodge shows that Prince Andrew secured a 75-year lease in 2003, paying £1 million upfront and a nominal annual rent of a peppercorn if requested.

Additionally, he contributed £7.5 million for renovations completed in 2005, as disclosed by the National Audit Office report. The agreement includes a provision for a payment of around £558,000 to Andrew if he relinquishes the lease.

Critics have questioned the fairness of the arrangement, speculating on potential financial losses to taxpayers, given that Crown Estate profits are directed to the Treasury.

Former Public Accounts Committee chair Baroness Hodge has called for a comprehensive audit of royal accounts by the Treasury to ensure transparency and accountability.

Amid ongoing scrutiny, Downing Street has endorsed the idea of Prince Andrew cooperating with law enforcement regarding any pertinent information on Epstein.

A spokesperson emphasized the importance of sharing relevant information with authorities during criminal investigations to facilitate due process.
