Sony Pictures announced on Monday that “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” set a new North American opening weekend record, surpassing “Avengers: Endgame” with $360 million US in ticket sales from theaters in the U.S. and Canada. Initially projected to earn $355 million US in its first weekend across 4,487 theaters, the fourth installment of the Spider-Man series, starring Tom Holland, exceeded expectations with a robust Sunday showing, ultimately bringing in more than the previous record.
Tom Rothman, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, expressed pride in breaking records, emphasizing the significance of this achievement. Prior to “Avengers: Endgame,” no movie had crossed the $300 million US mark domestically. Preceding films like “Avengers: Infinity War” in 2018 and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” in 2015 held the record with $257 million US and $247 million US respectively. Additionally, the third Tom Holland Spider-Man movie, “No Way Home,” joined the list in December 2021, debuting at $260 million US domestically and eventually reaching $1.9 billion US globally.
The successful performances of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and “The Odyssey,” which feature common actors like Holland, Zendaya, and Jon Bernthal, contributed to an overall record-breaking weekend for movie theaters in the U.S. and Canada. Box-office analytics company Rentrak reported that the domestic box office has seen a significant increase of over 15% compared to the previous year, accumulating more than $6.2 billion US in ticket sales thus far.
