Sky has recently announced a significant change that indicates a shift in TV viewing habits for the future, potentially marking the decline of traditional satellite dishes. The company has officially stopped selling its Sky Q set-top box on its website, redirecting new customers to consider Sky Stream or Sky Glass TVs instead.
In a statement, Sky stated, “We’ve unplugged Sky Q. Plug in Sky Stream for less. Sky Q is no longer available to buy online.” Individuals attempting to purchase Sky Q will now be prompted to choose the more affordable Stream box option, with Sky emphasizing, “You can take your viewing to the next level with Sky Stream starting at £15 per month.”
This transition is driven by the advantages offered by Sky Stream and Sky Glass, which deliver live and on-demand content over the internet rather than through traditional satellite signals. These alternatives are easy to set up, eliminating the need for engineer visits and wall drilling. Furthermore, they receive frequent updates and feature enhancements, with basic Sky Stream packages being notably cheaper than Sky Q, starting at just £15 monthly.
The move away from Sky Q is not surprising, as the company has observed a trend where most new customers prefer streaming-based solutions. However, existing Sky Q users need not worry as the change only affects new online orders. The device remains available for purchase by contacting Sky directly or visiting retail stores.
Sky reassured customers, stating, “Sky Q is no longer available online, but customers can order Sky Q by phone or in-store. Alternatively, they can opt for our popular streaming products, Sky Glass and Sky Stream, preferred by 9 out of 10 new customers.”
While Sky Q remains a favored choice for many households, the push towards a streaming-centric future is unmistakably gaining momentum.
