Elena Rybakina faced scrutiny from tennis legend Pam Shriver for opting not to take a photo with WTA official Portia Archer after clinching a major victory at the WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia. The Kazakhstani player defeated world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets to claim the title and a £4 million prize.
Traditionally, the tournament winner is photographed with the WTA CEO, but Rybakina chose not to stand alongside Archer during the trophy presentation, leading to an uncomfortable moment. This decision was seen as a protest against the suspension imposed on her coach, Stefano Vukov, for breaching the WTA’s code of conduct.
Vukov, who had previously guided Rybakina to success at Wimbledon, had his 12-month ban overturned in August after an appeal. Rybakina expressed her satisfaction with having Vukov back on her coaching team, stating that they never had any issues and he never mistreated her.
Shriver criticized Rybakina for snubbing Archer, emphasizing the importance of addressing abuse and manipulation in tennis. Despite not elaborating on her actions during the winners’ press conference, Rybakina criticized the WTA for its handling of the Vukov situation, highlighting communication gaps.
Reflecting on her tournament victory, Rybakina described it as an incredible week and unexpected result, emphasizing the tough competition she faced. Meanwhile, Sabalenka, who had a strong season with achievements like winning the US Open, expressed disappointment at not securing a Finals victory, acknowledging Rybakina’s superior performance on the court.
