Thousands of Russian soldiers, loyal to Vladimir Putin, are stranded on a remote island and facing starvation, as reported by Ukrainian officials. Approximately 5,000 troops are marooned in the perilous ‘death zone’ along the Dnipro River, situated in the southern region of Kherson, where they have been isolated since November 2022.
The Ukrainian forces control the right bank of the river, leaving the left bank under Russian jurisdiction. With limited options for cover during drone attacks, Putin’s soldiers are frequently targeted by opposition forces.
Since January, Ukrainian authorities claim that around 5,100 Russian soldiers have perished on the island due to a lack of essential supplies. Disturbing video footage captures Putin’s troops camouflaging themselves with vegetation to evade drone strikes.
In a harrowing scene, a group of soldiers is seen huddling in a small dinghy to escape the bombardments. Colonel Oleksandr Zavtonov of Ukraine’s 30th Marine Corps described the area as a deadly trap for Russian soldiers, stating that there is no safe refuge available.
Reports reveal that the stranded troops are struggling with severe shortages of food, water, and ammunition, according to Oksana Kuzan, the head of the analytical department at the Ukrainian Security and Cooperation Centre. He emphasized the dire conditions faced by the Russian military units in the Dnipro delta.
Recent updates follow President Zelensky’s optimistic response to a US-brokered ceasefire aimed at resolving conflict in Gaza, urging Donald Trump to exert similar pressure on Russia. Zelensky expressed hope for a comprehensive approach, including military actions, sanctions, diplomacy, and financial measures to halt Putin’s aggression.
Leaders from various countries, including Ukraine, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Poland, and others, have united in calling for peace and emphasizing the need for a just and enduring resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. They echo support for President Trump’s stance on immediate cessation of hostilities and the preservation of existing borders through peaceful negotiations.
