A Russian mother stands accused of kidnapping her British son and has resorted to social media to ridicule the ongoing search efforts by authorities attempting to locate her whereabouts.
Anastasiia Chikina, 32, disappeared from Marbella, Spain on July 4 along with her three-year-old son, Oliver Pugh, sparking an immediate manhunt and causing distress to the child’s British father, Matthew Pugh, aged 36. Despite extensive efforts, officials have been unsuccessful in tracking down the pair, leading to uncertainty regarding their current location, whether in Moscow or Malaysia.
Chikina’s actions have complicated the investigation further, as she taunted law enforcement with photos and cryptic references to a “date,” while her estranged spouse worries about their son’s safety.
Through a series of social media posts, the mother mocked attempts to locate her, claiming to be on a “date” in Kuala Lumpur, as depicted in images showing her alongside her sister with the iconic Petronas Twin Towers in the background. Other posts indicated visits to SKY51, a renowned rooftop bar in Malaysia, although geotagged posts suggested she might also be in Moscow.
She has made light of her husband’s offer of a reward for information leading to their son’s safe return, jesting in comments under her posts about the substantial monetary incentives being offered for information. Additionally, she shared with a follower on Telegram about going on a date, expressing her current state of mind as not ready to commit to a relationship.
An earlier post featuring a shopping mall with a Cartier store in the background hinted at Chikina’s presence in Bangkok, Thailand. Concerns were raised by the boy’s father and Spanish authorities that she may have taken the child to Russia, following their disappearance from Spain where they once lived a lavish lifestyle before facing difficulties.
Mr. Pugh speculated that his wife fled due to potential custody issues in Spain, where she may have lost custody of their son. Chikina has stressed in her messages that her son’s well-being is her top priority, pointing out the differing child custody regulations across European countries, including the UK.
Spanish police are actively pursuing Chikina on suspicions of abduction, collaborating with Interpol to locate her.
