Reform UK’s recent defeat in a significant Welsh constituency demonstrates that Nigel Farage’s party is not invincible, according to Andy Burnham. The Mayor of Greater Manchester highlighted a growing willingness in the country to counter the rise of right-wing groups following Labour’s loss in the Caerphilly Senned by-election, a seat they had held since its inception in 1999.
Despite being favored by bookmakers and investing resources in the campaign, Reform fell short in the election, with Plaid Cymru securing 47% of the vote compared to Reform’s 36%.
During a discussion event with The Mirror’s columnist Ros-Wynne Jones, Burnham emphasized the potential to challenge and defeat Reform, stating, “The positive takeaway from the Caerphilly by-election is that Reform can be defeated. There is a strong desire to confront and oppose them.”
Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram echoed Burnham’s sentiments, stressing the need to take on Reform directly. He highlighted the increasing competition from the Green Party, emphasizing the importance of unity within the Labour Party to effectively combat challenges from other political factions.
Burnham expressed satisfaction with Lucy Powell’s victory in the deputy leadership contest, emphasizing the necessity of a unified and inclusive approach to address the threat posed by Reform. He urged for collective efforts to tackle the current political landscape.
Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth hailed their victory in Caerphilly as a sign that the party is the preferred choice for Wales. He emphasized the electorate’s support for a positive and pro-Wales vision, signaling a shift towards new leadership and a more inclusive future for the country.
The outcome of the election in Caerphilly underscores Plaid Cymru’s position as a viable alternative to established parties, offering a vision that resonates with Welsh voters and stands against the influence of wealthy backers. The message is clear: Wales is ready for change, and Plaid Cymru is at the forefront of leading that transformation.
