“Probe Launched Into FlyDubai Stabbing on UAE Flight FZ1073”

Published:

The prosecutor general of the United Arab Emirates has initiated an inquiry into the stabbing incident that occurred on FlyDubai Flight FZ1073 en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The flight was diverted to Saudi Arabia following a struggle in the cockpit, as per reports from the state news agency on Thursday.

Investigations are underway in the UAE to ascertain the circumstances, motives, and potential ties to terrorist activities or premeditated actions. Emirati judicial authorities hold jurisdiction over the case due to the aircraft’s registration and flag under the UAE, with national laws applicable even for offenses committed outside the country’s borders.

The co-pilot’s attack on the captain raised concerns about the perpetrator’s intentions and background. Israeli officials suggested it was an attempt to crash the plane carrying over 170 individuals. Questions arose regarding the weapon used in the attack, particularly how it was smuggled onto the aircraft without detection.

Fortunately, disaster was averted when the injured captain unlocked the cockpit door, allowing passengers to subdue the assailant and enabling a reserve crew onboard to safely land the plane in Saudi Arabia. The attacker, identified as an Omani national, is under investigation in Saudi Arabia, with potential transfer to the UAE.

Saudi Arabia has not disclosed details of its investigations, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the ongoing probe and highlighted the attacker’s nationality. The injured pilots are receiving medical care at Tabuk airport in Saudi Arabia.

Israeli authorities described the co-pilot’s actions as a terrorist act aimed at crashing the plane, leading to a rapid descent before intervention from passengers and crew. The heroic actions of the captain, Smit Machchhar, an Indian national, were praised by leaders of Israel and India. Machchhar is reported to be in good health and recovering, with continuous support from the Indian Embassy in the UAE.

Passengers who intervened in the incident were also commended for their bravery. Yaniv Hayun, one of the individuals involved in subduing the attacker, recounted the harrowing experience as the plane descended, emphasizing the swift actions taken to regain control.

The security breach has heightened concerns in Israel, especially with upcoming elections and recent security challenges. The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing regional tensions, including past conflicts involving the U.S., Israel, Iran, and militant groups in the Middle East.
