Ottawa City Councillor Advocates for Renaming Trump Avenue Amid Trade Dispute
Amid escalating trade tensions with Canada, an Ottawa city councillor is pushing for the renaming of Trump Avenue, citing the need to sever ties with the controversial U.S. president. Previous attempts in 2021 to rename the street in the Central Park neighborhood faced opposition from residents, leading to a stalemate.
Councillor Riley Brockington emphasized the urgency of removing what he described as an embarrassment, given Trump’s threats to Canada’s interests. Brockington pledged to initiate the renaming process in collaboration with Trump Avenue residents following the upcoming election, emphasizing the need for swift action.
The Central Park area features streets with a New York City theme, including names like Staten Way and Grammercy Park. Brockington’s call for change coincided with a debate on supporting Ottawa businesses impacted by tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on Canadian exports worth $28 billion.
While Mayor Mark Sutcliffe acknowledged potential inconveniences for residents in changing addresses, he expressed his support for eliminating any association with Trump in Ottawa. Several Trump Avenue residents echoed the sentiment, deeming it inappropriate to honor a figure with strained relations with Canada.
John Germano, a resident of Trump Avenue, advocated for the immediate renaming of the street, emphasizing the need to distance Ottawa from Trump. However, not all residents supported the change, with some arguing that the street name aligns with the neighborhood’s New York theme.
As discussions continue, the community remains divided on the fate of Trump Avenue, reflecting broader sentiments amid the ongoing trade dispute.
