“Octopus and OVO Provide Free Electric Blankets to Help Struggling Households”

Published:

Energy suppliers like Octopus and OVO are providing complimentary electric blankets to households facing financial difficulties. Electric blankets consist of insulated wires that warm up when connected to power, offering a cost-effective alternative to central heating for reducing energy expenses.

Octopus customers in need can access free electric blankets through the Octo Assist program, a £40 million initiative aimed at aiding customers experiencing financial challenges. Eligibility typically requires struggling with energy bill payments or falling within vulnerable categories such as the elderly, households with young children, or individuals with specific health issues.

Aside from electric blankets, eligible individuals may also receive grants to clear energy debts, flexible payment options, or payment breaks. Applications can be submitted online through the Octopus website.

Similarly, OVO Energy is extending support through its Extra Support Package, valued at £56 million. In addition to electric blankets and smart sockets, households in need may qualify for home upgrades like loft insulation or new boilers. OVO offers payment plans and emergency credit to assist struggling customers, with applications accepted via the OVO website.

Recently, energy bills have risen, with the Ofgem price cap increasing from £1,720 to £1,755 for a standard dual fuel household paying via direct debit. This price cap will remain in effect until December 31, subject to further adjustments. Customers on standard variable rate (SVR) tariffs fall under the Ofgem price cap unless locked into fixed-rate deals.

Although there is a price cap on gas and electricity units and standing charges, the total energy bill depends on actual consumption. The price cap sets limits on charges for energy units and fixed daily connection fees to the energy network, reflecting the annual cost for a household with average energy usage assumptions.
