“NHL Prospect Matthew Mayich Hospitalized After Training Incident”

Published:

NHL prospect Matthew Mayich, a native of Hamilton who previously played junior hockey for the Ottawa 67’s, is currently hospitalized in Arizona due to an incident during off-ice training, as reported by the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Mayich, 21, was selected by the St. Louis Blues in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL draft.

According to his player profile, Mayich participated in minor hockey with the Hamilton Huskies from 2016 to 2020 before transitioning to the 67’s. The OHL stated that he was admitted to the hospital on August 20 in Arizona while preparing for the 2026-27 season.

In response to the situation, CBC Hamilton contacted Arizona State University, where Mayich is listed as a player, to inquire about the incident. The university confirmed that a student from the hockey team collapsed during an outdoor morning exercise and is currently under medical care. The university has refrained from disclosing the student’s identity and is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Expressing concern for Mayich’s well-being, Doug Armstrong, the President of Hockey Operations for the St. Louis Blues, conveyed the organization’s prayers and support for his recovery in Arizona. OHL Commissioner Bryan Crawford also extended thoughts and support to Mayich and his family during this challenging period.

The Hamilton Steel Hockey Club, formerly known as the Huskies, previously acknowledged Mayich’s achievements when he signed with the ’67s in 2021 and when he was drafted by the Blues in 2023. The Huskies highlighted his long-standing involvement with the organization since he was nine years old.
