“Newly Promoted Teams Shine in Premier League 2025/26”

Published:

Influenced by commentators who nonchalantly suggest that the top European champions compete in inferior domestic leagues, claiming Spain has only two competitive clubs and Germany has just one, the Premier League is often perceived as self-important. Boasting about being the best in every aspect is common rhetoric among pundits. This includes the belief that the league is the most fiercely competitive, with anyone capable of defeating anyone else, making every game a challenge. However, this narrative was proven false over the last two seasons, specifically in 2023/24 and 24/25.

During the 2023/24 season, Luton Town, Burnley, and Sheffield United were considered easy opponents, whether playing at home or away, any day of the week. These three teams collectively participated in 114 Premier League matches and managed to win only 14 of them.

Similarly, in the 2024/25 season, Leicester City, Ipswich Town, and Southampton were also perceived as easy fixtures, with a combined total of 114 matches played and only 12 wins secured among them.

In essence, these six teams struggled over the two seasons, winning a mere 26 out of 228 Premier League games. Notably, nine of these victories were against each other. Their combined win percentage was a dismal 11.4% with an overall goal difference of -294, averaging at -1.3 per game, highlighting their poor performance.

Contrastingly, the three newly promoted teams in the current 2025/26 season have shown a remarkable improvement. Collectively, they have won 11 out of 27 Premier League matches, boasting a combined win rate of 40.7% and a goal difference of -6, averaging at -0.02 per game, demonstrating a significant enhancement in their competitiveness.

Although Leeds United and Burnley have garnered respectable points, Sunderland and Régis Le Bris stand out as the frontrunners among the newly promoted teams. Their enthusiastic approach and positive results in the Premier League have garnered admiration, showcasing that success is achievable even for recently promoted clubs.

The strategic appointment of Le Bris by Kyril Louis-Dreyfus has proven to be a masterstroke, transforming Sunderland into a formidable team. Despite initial doubts surrounding Le Bris’s capabilities, his effective leadership and tactical decisions have led the team to notable victories, such as the recent triumph against Chelsea.

Furthermore, Le Bris’s affable demeanor and collaborative efforts with the club’s management and recruitment department have facilitated a necessary overhaul of the squad, paving the way for the integration of seasoned players like Granit Xhaka and promising talents like Habib Diarra, Noah Sadiki, and Chemsdine Talbi. This strategic recruitment strategy has not only received acclaim but has also instilled hope and excitement among supporters.

Sunderland’s fanbase has played a pivotal role in supporting the team’s success, embracing Le Bris’s vision for the club and fostering a positive atmosphere. Despite the conventional goal-setting of reaching 40 points being emphasized by Le Bris, his dedication and commitment to elevating Sunderland’s performance have garnered widespread approval and optimism for the club’s future in the top-flight football arena.
