“New Freely Box to Challenge Sky Q Dominance”

Published:

Sky Q has dominated the market for more than a decade as one of the most favored TV devices in the UK. Its capacity to store extensive content has been a key factor in its enduring popularity. However, a potential new competitor may be on the horizon, offering similar functionalities without any subscription fees.

Freely, already integrated into many new TVs, allows households to access live and on-demand content without requiring an aerial, as everything is transmitted via the internet directly to the screen.

Although currently only available through the purchase of a new television, the landscape is set to change with the imminent arrival of a dedicated set-top box from the creators of Freely and Freeview. The first glimpse of this Freely device, crafted by Humax, has surfaced online. This device not only grants free TV access but also enables users to record programs, reminiscent of Sky Q. Additionally, it boasts 4K capabilities for exceptionally sharp visuals, four times superior to standard HD.

While the initial cost of the box might begin at below £250, making it relatively pricey, once acquired, there are no additional charges as all Freely content is completely complimentary.

Exact details regarding the launch date of the new Freely boxes are yet to be disclosed, but their availability in stores could be imminent.

Interestingly, the previously visible online listing has been removed, hinting at a premature reveal. Any updates will be promptly shared as they emerge.

Jonathan Thompson, CEO of Everyone TV, expressed earlier this year, “Freely was designed to make free TV accessible to all. Expanding to ‘plug-in and stream’ devices marks a crucial and logical progression to ensure more households can enjoy the full Freely experience without the need for TV upgrades or paid subscriptions.”

Although Freely offers features akin to Sky Glass, Sky Stream, and Sky Q, it falls short in terms of content variety compared to Sky. Notably, Freely lacks access to premium sports, movies, or box sets from channels like Sky Atlantic or Sky Max. Moreover, it does not support external services such as Netflix integration within the platform.

To access the additional premium content, opting for one of Sky’s plans is necessary. These plans now commence at just £15 per month and often include access to Netflix as well.
