“NATO intercepts drone near US base in Estonia amid Russian border tensions”

Published:

NATO forces successfully intercepted an unidentified drone near a US military base in Estonia, situated close to the Russian border. The drone was sighted hovering near Camp Reedo, a strategic base utilized by the US Army Europe and Africa, less than 30 miles from the Russian border. This incident occurred on October 17 and has recently been disclosed.

Reports indicate that two drones were observed in the vicinity, with one of them being neutralized, although the involvement of US forces remains uncertain. The Estonian Defence Forces headquarters confirmed the detection of the drones near the 2nd Infantry Brigade’s military base and the subsequent downing of one of them using an anti-drone rifle.

Estonian authorities launched a search operation for the downed drone, which has so far been unsuccessful. Recent airspace violations by Russian MiG-31 fighters over Estonian territory have raised concerns about security in the region.

Estonia, considered one of NATO’s most vulnerable members facing potential Russian aggression, hosts British troops as part of a NATO battlegroup deployed under Operation Cabrit since 2017. The Reedo base accommodates the US Army’s 5th Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, an armored reconnaissance unit.

In response to escalating tensions, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna emphasized the need for NATO to be prepared to intercept and take down any aircraft violating sovereign airspace. The minister stressed the importance of defending not only Estonia’s borders but also those of NATO as a whole.

Meanwhile, Ukraine launched significant strikes against Russian targets overnight, causing substantial damage to oil and petrochemical facilities. The attacks targeted various locations, including oil depots and refineries, leading to petrol price hikes and supply shortages in Russia.

These events underscore the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region and the heightened need for vigilance and coordinated responses to ensure security and stability.
