An attack targeting National Guard members in Washington DC has resulted in the death of one guard, as confirmed by officials. President Trump announced the passing of Sarah Beckstrom, a 20-year-old member, during a Thanksgiving call with US service members on Thursday. Another member, Andrew Wolfe, 24, remains in critical condition.
In a statement, President Trump praised Sarah Beckstrom’s character and courage, describing her as a highly respected individual. Sarah’s father, Gary Beckstrom, shared the heartbreaking news earlier, stating that her injuries were fatal.
Governor Patrick Morrisey hailed Sarah’s bravery and dedication to duty, emphasizing her sacrifice in serving her state and country. The tragic incident involved a suspected shooter identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national, and is under FBI investigation as a potential act of terror.
According to reports, Lakanwal allegedly ambushed the guards near Farragut West Metro Station, shooting Sarah before being subdued. Both guards were rushed to different hospitals in critical condition. US Attorney Jeanine Pirro commended the guards’ selfless actions and highlighted the risks faced by law enforcement members.
President Trump expressed condolences to the affected families and criticized President Biden’s immigration policies in the aftermath of the incident. Law enforcement sources revealed that a suspect in custody also sustained gunshot wounds.
Efforts to enhance security measures are underway, with a temporary halt on immigration requests related to Afghan nationals. While condemning the attack, an Afghan advocacy group cautioned against unfairly targeting Afghan communities in America.
