A mysterious floating island that appeared and then vanished in the Williston Reservoir in northern British Columbia has intrigued locals and B.C. Hydro. The island, initially discovered by a boater and shared on social media, generated widespread interest.
The island, estimated to be around 70 meters wide and 140 meters long, was larger than a Canadian football field and nearly the size of two NFL fields. However, satellite imagery from July 21 confirmed its existence, but by August 5, it was no longer visible.
B.C. Hydro spokesperson Bob Gammer expressed surprise at the island’s discovery, attributing initial skepticism to the prevalence of generative AI technology. The island’s sudden appearance and disappearance puzzled experts, with theories suggesting it may have formed over time due to rising reservoir levels.
While floating islands are rare in Williston Lake, they are a common occurrence in dam-building projects worldwide. B.C. Hydro is monitoring the situation closely and relies on public reports to track any further sightings of the elusive island.
With the reservoir at full capacity for the first time in 14 years, the appearance of the floating island adds to the unique natural phenomena witnessed in the region. Local authorities urge caution to boaters navigating the area due to potential hazards posed by drifting debris and submerged obstacles.
