Several individuals are feared to have sustained injuries following an incident at an international airport. Approximately 17 people were reportedly involved in the mishap when a raised, bus-like vehicle utilized for transporting passengers between the terminal and an aircraft collided at Washington Dulles International Airport, located around 26 miles west of the US capital, on November 10.
The loaded mobile lounge, commonly referred to as ‘people movers,’ impacted a dock at an angle while approaching the building at approximately 4:30 p.m. local time, as stated by the airport in a post on the X platform, previously known as Twitter. Passengers disembarked from the mobile lounge using stairs and are currently being assessed by Airports Authority Fire & Rescue personnel for potential injuries, according to the post.
As per the report by the Daily Star, hospitals in the vicinity have been preliminarily informed to prepare for up to 17 patients. The airport’s mobile lounges were first introduced in 1962 upon the airport’s opening, and discontinuing the use of these vehicles has recently been a subject of discussion.
Recently, a nominee to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) Board of Directors informed lawmakers that he would gradually phase out the people movers at the airport if appointed, as reported by AirlineGeeks. Despite the incident, the airport remains operational, and regular operations are ongoing.
