Rachel Reeves is facing calls to ignore industry fear tactics and reveal potential gambling tax increases in the upcoming Budget. A group of influential MPs is urging the Chancellor to move forward with measures against companies profiting significantly from gambling activities, causing notable harm.
A recent report from the Treasury Committee recognizes that while many individuals engage in gambling responsibly at venues like arcades and bingo halls, there has been a notable shift towards online gambling platforms that promote harmful and addictive behavior without benefiting individuals, families, or communities.
Despite pushback from the gambling industry, the committee dismissed claims that gambling has no negative societal impacts. Dame Meg Hillier, the committee chair, highlighted concerns about the industry’s concealment of the detrimental aspects of online gambling behind more traditional forms. She emphasized the severe impact of online betting on individuals and their surrounding communities.
The report points to government data indicating a significant increase in profits for online gambling operators over the past decade. It recommends raising the remote gaming duty, predominantly affecting online operations, as well as the machine games duty, which mainly pertains to physical slot machines. The suggested tax rates for online operations should surpass those paid by casino clubs.
Potential tax hikes are likely to draw criticism from bookmakers who argue that higher online taxes could diminish their overall revenue, including from physical stores. Critics also warn that an increase in machine games duty may adversely affect seaside arcades, pubs, and bingo halls hosting slot machines.
MPs are also calling on the government to address concerns raised by the industry about tax hikes potentially driving consumers towards unregulated betting entities. Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown has previously supported calls for increased levies on gambling firms to generate funds for combating child poverty.
There is speculation that Rachel Reeves might exempt horse racing from heightened gambling taxes.
