“MP’s Residence Targeted in Arson Attack: Suspect Apprehended and Facing Charges”

Published:

A suspect has been apprehended in connection with a series of vehicle fires at the residence of a Member of Parliament (MP) in Scarborough, as reported by Toronto law enforcement officials. Roshvin Crofton, aged 24, was taken into custody on Sunday and is facing charges that include arson causing property damage, mischief exceeding $5,000, conspiracy to commit a serious offense, possession of incendiary materials, and violation of probation terms, according to a police statement released on Friday.

Authorities also seized a 2025 Hyundai Sonata believed to be linked to the incident and are seeking details on its whereabouts before the alleged arson. Additionally, a second suspect is being pursued by the police in connection with the case.

The incident, which occurred in the driveway of Liberal MP Salma Zahid’s home, targeted several vehicles. An unidentified individual reportedly approached the vehicles early on August 27, poured an accelerant on two of them, and set them ablaze before fleeing the scene. A third vehicle sustained damage from the resulting flames.

In response to the arrest, Zahid expressed gratitude towards Toronto police, stating, “I welcome word of an arrest and charges related to the arson incident outside my home on August 27th.” She acknowledged the ongoing investigation and the pursuit of an additional suspect, emphasizing the need for clarity on the motive behind the attack before further comments can be made.

Zahid, who has represented Scarborough Centre as a Liberal Member of Parliament since 2015, holds leadership roles in parliamentary committees and associations. The incident has elicited condemnation from various political figures, including Prime Minister Mark Carney, who characterized the fire as a “cowardly act of violence and intimidation.”

The situation continues to be under investigation, with Toronto police urging anyone with relevant information to come forward.
