“Mother’s Nine-Year Rat Infestation Ordeal Ignored by Council”

Published:

A distressed mother shared her harrowing experience of enduring a nine-year ordeal living with a rat infestation in her council house in Brynteg, Wrexham. The woman, who chose to remain anonymous, detailed the constant presence of rodents emerging from kitchen cupboards, causing her children to be too frightened to use the bathroom.

Expressing her frustration, she criticized Wrexham Council for failing to address the long-standing issue, leaving her feeling abandoned with no alternative housing solution. Despite maintaining cleanliness in the home, she suspects a nearby rat colony has made their property a target for infestation, affecting various areas like the attic, floorboards, walls, and cupboards.

The mother recounted the challenges of dealing with the rats damaging food supplies, disrupting sleep, and creating an unbearable living environment for her family. The situation has taken a toll on her autistic child, exacerbating sensory sensitivities and causing distress due to the noise and smell generated by the pests.

Efforts to seek assistance from the council and other organizations have been met with limited success, with proposed relocations posing logistical challenges, especially for the autistic child’s schooling arrangements. Despite numerous pleas and documentation submitted, the family feels unheard and unsupported in their quest for a resolution.

In response, Wrexham Council acknowledged the complaint, confirming pest control measures were taken and alternative housing offers were made but declined by the family. Housing decisions are based on specific criteria, including need, demand, and availability of suitable properties, according to Cllr David Bithell, the council’s Deputy Leader and housing lead.

The ongoing ordeal has left the family desperate for a solution, emphasizing the urgent need to address the infestation to alleviate the distress and hardships they have endured for nearly a decade.
