A mother has criticized the judicial system for what she perceives as a light punishment given to the perpetrator who sexually abused her daughter. Liam Moir initiated the abuse when the girl turned 12 and continued for five months until the victim disclosed the incidents to her grandmother after he threatened her younger sister. The abuser was recently sentenced to 18 months in prison and placed on the sex offenders register for a decade by Glasgow Sheriff Court.
Expressing her disappointment with the sentence, the mother stated that it seemed insufficient considering the emotional trauma her daughter will endure. She emphasized that the perpetrator might not serve the full term and could be released early, causing ongoing distress to the victim. The daughter, now 14, revealed that Moir had warned her that her mother would not believe her, prompting her to confide in her grandmother to protect her sibling.
The courageous young girl testified in court against her abuser, but her mother noted the significant psychological impact the ordeal had on her. The daughter’s behavior changed drastically, leading to self-harm and an eating disorder, affecting her social life and education. Despite the challenges, the family is hopeful that with Moir behind bars, the girl can begin her healing process and regain a sense of security.
Recent data indicated a rise in reported sexual crimes, with a substantial increase in rape and attempted rape cases over the past decade. The mother expressed a desire to help her daughter rebuild her confidence and move forward during the period of the perpetrator’s incarceration, aiming for her daughter’s recovery and well-being.
