Mobile network operators such as BT EE, VodafoneThree, and Virgin Media O2 are taking action to prevent foreign call centers from posing as banks in a move to crack down on scams. These networks have committed to enhancing their systems within the next year to prevent foreign call centers from falsifying UK numbers.
Fraudsters often engage in number spoofing, a technique where they manipulate their phone numbers and caller IDs to appear trustworthy. The upcoming crackdown will ensure that calls originating from overseas are clearly identified.
To bolster security measures, artificial intelligence (AI) will be utilized to identify and block suspicious calls and texts. Additionally, advanced call tracing technology will be provided to law enforcement agencies to aid in tracking down scammers nationwide.
Major companies, including BT EE, Virgin Media O2, VodafoneThree, Tesco Mobile, Talk Talk, Sky, and Comms Council UK (CCUK), have joined forces to combat fraudulent activities.
Recent statistics reveal that 96% of mobile users make decisions on answering calls based on displayed numbers, with most individuals hesitant to pick up calls from unknown international numbers.
Addressing the issue, Minister for Fraud, Lord Hanson, emphasized the detrimental impact of spoofed calls, enabling scammers to deceive the public. The government is resolute in its commitment to combating fraud by eliminating call spoofing within a year, making the UK a tough environment for scammers.
Individuals are urged to report scams and fraudulent activities to Action Fraud or relevant authorities. In Scotland, scams can be reported to Advice Direct Scotland or Police Scotland. Suspicious emails should be forwarded to report@phishing.gov.uk, while dubious text messages can be sent to 7726. Dodgy websites can be reported to the National Cyber Security Centre.
In case of suspected scam calls, it is advised to disconnect immediately and verify the caller’s details online. Never dial back the provided number; instead, contact your bank promptly if fraud is suspected. Changing compromised passwords is recommended as a precautionary measure.
