Formula One icon Michael Schumacher has adapted to using his eyes as a means of communication, nearly 12 years after a life-altering skiing incident. Following a severe brain injury sustained in the French Alps in December 2013, Schumacher has been out of the public eye, with his wife Corinna managing his care.
Initially, there were hopes of a full recovery for the seven-time F1 champion, but fans have come to terms with the likelihood that Schumacher may never make a public comeback.
Despite limited visitations to the Schumacher household post-accident, some details regarding the former racer’s current situation have surfaced. Elisabetta Gregoraci, the ex-wife of former Benetton chief Flavio Briatore, disclosed in 2020 that Schumacher now communicates solely through his eyes.
In a statement to Spanish media, Gregoraci mentioned, “Michael communicates using his eyes as he cannot speak. Only three individuals are permitted to visit him, and his wife has arranged for a medical facility within their Spanish residence.”
Corinna, aged 56, who wed Schumacher in 1995, has been overseeing her husband’s care since the tragic incident. This responsibility has led to stringent restrictions on access to the racing legend.
Despite his seclusion, Schumacher was reported to have made a rare appearance at his daughter Gina-Maria’s wedding in September 2024. Allegedly present at the ceremony held at their Mallorca villa, guests were reportedly asked to surrender their mobile devices to prevent unauthorized photos of Schumacher.
While most of Schumacher’s care occurs at their Lake Geneva property in Switzerland, significant time has also been spent at their Mallorca residence purchased in 2017. Corinna finalized the acquisition of the lavish estate, previously owned by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, dispelling earlier rumors of a permanent relocation.
Despite being away from the public eye, Schumacher remains a beloved figure among F1 enthusiasts and acquaintances. Jean Todt, his former Ferrari team principal, expressed fondness for their bond but acknowledged the changes in Schumacher’s condition in 2023.
Todt remarked, “Michael is still here, so I cherish our time together. However, he is not the same Michael we once knew. He now leads a different life, guided wonderfully by his family, who shield him. I am privileged to share moments with him.”
