A man in his thirties, Dan Godley, was diagnosed with stage three pancreatic cancer after experiencing tightness in his stomach. Following the diagnosis, he underwent Folfirinox chemotherapy and later discovered the tumor was entwined around a crucial artery. To combat the cancer, he underwent a unique treatment known as Irreversible Electroporation but ultimately had a total pancreatectomy, removing his pancreas, gallbladder, and common bile duct. Fortunately, in July 2022, Dan was declared cancer-free thanks to the innovative surgery.
Reflecting on his experience, Dan highlighted the importance of awareness about pancreatic cancer, drawing attention to the recent passing of R&B singer D’Angelo due to the same disease. Dan emphasized the significance of early detection, underscoring how D’Angelo’s public battle with cancer has raised awareness about the condition.
Diagnosed in November 2021, Dan was initially given a prognosis of 12 to 18 months. Despite the emotional turmoil of the news, which he proposed to his girlfriend immediately after hearing, the gravity of the situation did not fully register with him right away. Dan expressed how the diagnosis initially felt surreal and incomprehensible to him.
Pancreatic cancer ranks as the fifth most fatal cancer in the UK, claiming the lives of around 9,000 individuals annually. While the disease predominantly affects older individuals, Dan, diagnosed at a young age of 28, faced initial doubts from medical professionals about treatment options due to the advanced stage of his cancer.
Post-surgery, Dan underwent chemotherapy, completed in February of the following year, and has since embraced a positive outlook on life. Celebrating milestones like his marriage to Anna and engaging in physical activities like cycling and gym sessions, Dan expressed gratitude for the successful surgery that removed the tumor entirely, allowing him to embark on a new chapter in his life.
