“Lucy Powell Grateful for Labour Deputy Leader Win”

Published:

Lucy Powell expressed her gratitude to Labour supporters for electing her as the Deputy Leader of the party, emphasizing the honor she felt in being chosen for the role. The Manchester Central MP stated her intention to forego a return to government positions to enable her to voice her opinions more freely regarding the party’s direction while in office. Powell secured victory in the Labour deputy leadership contest with 54% of the votes, surpassing Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson who garnered a 46% share. She underlined the importance of offering hope and substantial change that the country seeks, emphasizing the need to clarify the party’s purpose, values, and alignment with the people.

Powell critiqued the current government for its perceived lack of boldness in delivering the promised changes, highlighting the concerns raised by the public. The leadership contest was initiated by Angela Rayner’s resignation due to a property purchase oversight related to stamp duty payment. Powell received 87,407 votes from Labour Party members and affiliates, while Phillipson secured 73,536 votes, although the voter turnout stood at a modest 16.6%.

In her acceptance speech, Powell acknowledged the hard work and integrity of the team that facilitated the leadership contest, expressing her gratitude to the party members and supporters who voted for her. She paid tribute to Bridget Phillipson and Angela Rayner, recognizing their contributions to the party and the country’s welfare. Powell reinforced her commitment to supporting Keir Starmer in the challenging political landscape, emphasizing the importance of progressive, mainstream politics in effecting positive change in people’s lives.

Emphasizing the urgency of the political situation, Powell highlighted the need for the Labour Party to reclaim the narrative and address pressing issues such as widening inequalities and economic disparities. She stressed the party’s historical role in championing worker rights and social justice, citing key achievements of past Labour governments. Powell pledged to amplify the voices of party members and stakeholders, aiming to foster unity and purpose within the party.

Looking ahead to upcoming elections in England, Scotland, and Wales, Powell underscored the importance of building a broad, progressive consensus rather than engaging in divisive strategies. She committed to working tirelessly to drive meaningful change and fulfill the mandate for a better Britain. Powell concluded her speech by reiterating her dedication to serving the country, the party, and the people.
