“Lidl Tops Aldi as Most Affordable Supermarket Again”

Published:

Lidl has once again outperformed Aldi to claim the title of the most affordable supermarket, as reported by Which? for the second time recently.

In October, a basket of 70 items at Lidl averaged £120.46, or £120.38 for members of its loyalty program Lidl Plus. The same set of products at Aldi came to an average of £121.

According to Which? analysis, Aldi has been ranked as the cheapest supermarket 22 times out of the last 24 months. The comparison list comprised both branded and own-label items including Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter.

For Tesco customers, the bill for the same basket was £134.89 last month, or £133.38 with a Clubcard. Meanwhile, Sainsbury’s shoppers would have paid £139.68, or £136.79 with a Nectar card.

Which? also evaluates prices for a more extensive selection of 187 items, excluding Aldi and Lidl due to their smaller product range compared to other supermarkets.

Asda retained its position as the most budget-friendly option for a larger shopping list, costing £469.11. In comparison, the same basket would have totaled £476.11 for Tesco Clubcard holders and £481.34 at Morrisons with a More loyalty card.

Waitrose emerged as the priciest option for both small and large shopping lists in October. The Which? analysis factored in special offer prices and loyalty discounts, excluding multi-buy deals.

Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, commented on the results, highlighting Lidl’s cost-effective offerings and Asda’s competitive pricing for a broader range of branded goods. As household concerns over rising food prices continue, strategic shopping at different supermarkets could yield savings of up to 26%.
