Israel conducted an airstrike in the central Gaza Strip on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of two Palestinians, including a three-year-old child, as reported by health officials. Gaza medics confirmed that the strike occurred near a bakery in Deir al-Balah, claiming the lives of Tayyem Hamdan, aged 3, and Hussam Nusair, while also injuring several others.
The Israeli military stated that the airstrike was targeted at and successfully eliminated a Hamas militant, identifying Nusair as someone who orchestrated attacks against Israeli forces and civilians. Hamas has not yet responded to these allegations made by the Israeli military.
Despite a U.S.-backed ceasefire implemented last October to reduce major conflicts in the region, sporadic strikes by the Israeli military have persisted. The Israeli military justifies these actions as preemptive measures to prevent attacks by Hamas and other Gaza-based militants.
Hamas has accused Israel of breaching the ceasefire terms and hindering the broader peace efforts outlined in a plan proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. The peace plan includes Israeli withdrawals from certain areas and the disarmament of Hamas.
Since the ceasefire came into effect last October, over 1,300 Palestinians have lost their lives in Gaza, according to health officials in the region. Conversely, the Israeli military reports the deaths of four Israeli soldiers during the same period.
