Google has announced that it will cease support for its Chrome browser on older versions of Apple’s macOS platform, impacting users of MacBooks. While Chrome will remain operational on these devices, users will no longer receive updates or security patches, leaving them vulnerable to potential cyber threats.
The changes will affect Macs running macOS 12 (Monterey) or earlier. Users on these systems will need to upgrade to a newer operating system like macOS Ventura to continue receiving browser support. However, some older Mac models, including iMacs predating 2017 and MacBook Airs purchased before 2018, may not be compatible with Ventura, necessitating the purchase of a new device for continued safe Chrome usage.
The transition is set to take effect in July of this year. Google has specified that Chrome version 150 is the final release compatible with macOS 12 (Monterey). Subsequent versions, starting with Chrome 151 scheduled for July 28, 2026, will require macOS 13 Ventura or later. Users are advised to ensure their devices are running macOS 13 or above to receive future Chrome updates.
While older Chrome versions will still function, no further updates will be provided for users on macOS 12 (Monterey). Google encourages those on this system to upgrade to a supported macOS version to ensure they receive the latest security updates and Chrome features.
