“First Liver Transplant with Regenerated Organ in North America”

A man from Quebec, aged 64, has made history by becoming the first individual in North America to undergo a liver transplant involving a regenerated liver. This groundbreaking technology has the potential to significantly increase the number of viable livers for transplantation, with projections suggesting dozens of additional livers could be made available for transplant within the first year alone.

The recipient, Gérard Landry, hailing from Nouvelle on Quebec’s Gaspé Peninsula, had been grappling with liver issues for approximately 15 years, culminating in cirrhosis and liver cancer. Prior to his transplant surgery, Landry received surprising news from his doctor that his new liver had been regenerated using a novel machine at Montreal’s Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM), marking its inaugural use.

Referred to as Liver Assist, this technology enables medical professionals to assess and treat a donated liver externally before the transplant procedure. For Landry, this meant receiving a liver that might have been deemed too risky for transplantation under normal circumstances.

Dr. David Hénault, a liver transplant specialist and hepatopancreatobiliary surgeon at CHUM, spearheaded the project and conducted Landry’s surgery. The innovative Liver Assist system involves connecting a donated liver to a device that circulates an oxygen-rich solution through the organ, potentially reversing damage caused by oxygen deprivation while the liver is outside the body.

Hénault mentioned that the technology facilitates a transition to a blood-based solution, allowing doctors to evaluate how the liver functions under conditions simulating the human body. This process helps determine the organ’s viability for transplantation.

The implementation of this technology could significantly augment the number of livers available for transplant, as demonstrated by a study conducted in collaboration with Transplant Québec. The team anticipates that the Liver Assist machine could potentially enable an additional 20 to 24 livers to be utilized for transplantation in its initial year of operation, with the potential for further expansion as the technology gains wider acceptance.

Dr. Hénault highlighted the potential benefits of this technology in reducing complications, reoperations, and hospital stays for eligible patients. Early indications following Landry’s transplant surgery showed promising results, with improved blood work suggesting a successful outcome.

As Landry continues his recovery in Montreal, with regular hospital visits for monitoring and medication adjustments, he looks forward to returning to Gaspésie for further recuperation. Expressing eagerness to reunite with his family, including his grandson and horses, Landry hopes his experience will inspire conversations about organ donation, emphasizing the importance of having a pool of donated organs available for those in need of life-saving transplants.
