A dramatic incident unfolded when a Tesla driver experienced a terrifying explosion while attempting to charge his car using an adapter. The explosive event was captured on camera in Hope, British Columbia, as a non-Tesla A27 EV adapter malfunctioned, leading to a fiery blast at the charging point. The footage shows flames engulfing the charger, emitting plumes of smoke into the sky, and ultimately causing the driver to be forcefully thrown to the ground by the explosion.
In the video, the driver is seen stumbling and falling before managing to regain his footing, while a passenger inside the vehicle rushes to his aid. Thankfully, the driver sustained only minor scrapes, although the vehicle itself displayed burn marks, as confirmed by Technical Safety BC.
The adapter had been utilized approximately 50 times before the explosion occurred. It is believed that multiple malfunctions coincided, including a short circuit within the fast charger that generated an abnormal voltage through the device, resulting in the explosive incident captured on camera.
Referred to as an “arc-flash” by experts, this type of malfunction releases a burst of heat and light. The National Fire Protection Association highlighted that such occurrences are often caused by plugging the device into a higher voltage or by the presence of moisture or damage to the insulation layer.
Following the investigation, manufacturer A2Z EV stated that the malfunction originated at the charging station, absolving their A2Z EV adapter from any manufacturing or insulation defects. The company explained that the observed damage was consistent with an external ground fault originating from the charger, turning the adapter into a secondary path for the current once the charger’s internal fault energized the ground circuit.
A2Z EV affirmed their commitment to transparency and safety within the EV charging ecosystem, pledging to collaborate with customers, partners, and regulators to enhance the industry’s standards. The company’s CEO expressed regret over the incident, emphasizing the importance of maintaining trust and confidence in EV technology.
