The Federal Court has mandated the disclosure of previously hidden sections from a September 1986 report commissioned for a significant federal inquiry into war crimes. Federal Court Justice Simon Fothergill’s recent ruling instructed the government to unveil redacted segments of the report regarding the integration of suspected Nazi war criminals into Canada post-World War II. B’nai Brith Canada has persistently advocated for broader access to the findings compiled by researcher Alti Rodal.
In response to a request from B’nai Brith, Library and Archives Canada released additional excerpts from the report in February 2024. However, certain content, notably sections detailing the involvement of American intelligence agencies in aiding the settlement of Nazi collaborators in Canada, was still withheld by Library and Archives.
Fothergill dismissed the government’s argument that revealing more information could adversely impact Canada’s international relationships.
