At least 62 individuals have lost their lives due to prolonged heavy rainfall and flooding in the northern region of Uttar Pradesh, India. State authorities reported that 46 people sustained injuries and over 1,000 residences were damaged following three consecutive days of intense downpours leading to inundation across multiple districts.
In response to the crisis, schools in various parts of the state, including the capital city of Lucknow, were shut on Monday. Rescue teams were actively engaged in relocating residents from submerged areas to safer zones. Citizens were cautioned against unnecessary travel through waterlogged areas and advised to steer clear of swiftly flowing rivers, streams, and drains.
The weather outlook indicated a reduction in rainfall starting Monday as a weather system originating from the Bay of Bengal began to dissipate, as stated by Atul Kumar Singh, a senior scientist at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Lucknow. However, light showers were anticipated to persist in the eastern and western sections of the state until Tuesday.
Furthermore, flooding impacts were also observed in the eastern province of Odisha, prompting the evacuation of over 75,000 individuals to secure locations, according to official reports. Meanwhile, in neighboring Nepal, 21 fatalities were recorded in weather-related events spanning from Thursday to Sunday, with five individuals still unaccounted for and five others injured. Floods and landslides wreaked havoc on 194 residences.
Nepal continues to recuperate from the severe floods in August, which resulted in the loss of more than 1,400 lives and the disappearance of nearly 6,000 individuals.
