A former teacher who previously worked at Eton College has been found guilty of sexually assaulting a student. Jacob Leland, a former Russian language teacher at the school’s Modern Languages Department from 2010 to 2012, was convicted today of three counts of sexual assault on a student. The trial at Reading Crown Court included testimonies from pupils and teachers, revealing that Leland engaged in inappropriate behavior, including performing oral sex on the student. Leland, aged 37, was cleared of 11 other charges.
Eton’s current headmaster, Simon Henderson, issued a comprehensive apology to those affected by Leland’s actions in a detailed letter, denouncing the severe breach of trust that occurred. Henderson emphasized the need for an external review to address the situation, stating, “As Head Master, I am shocked by the abuse that took place at Eton.”
Furthermore, Henderson acknowledged the delay in uncovering the details of the incidents and expressed regret that the affected individuals were not adequately protected. He extended his heartfelt apologies on behalf of the school, praising the courage of the victims for coming forward and ensuring justice was served.
During the trial, it was revealed that Leland had engaged in inappropriate physical contact with the student, including kissing and placing the student’s hand on his groin. An ex-pupil recounted instances where Leland would enter their rooms and initiate physical wrestling matches, exerting force on the students.
Mr. Henderson stressed the importance of not overlooking past offenses and emphasized Eton’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its students. He highlighted the institution’s improved safeguarding measures and announced plans for an external review to analyze the case and provide recommendations for the future.
The sentencing for Leland is scheduled for December 11.
