An 80-year-old woman was discovered deceased on a secluded island after she failed to rejoin her cruise ship in Australia.
The elderly woman was reportedly hiking near the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Queensland when she went missing during an excursion. Her body was located on the mountain a day later following an alert raised by the ship’s staff. Authorities have stated that they do not consider the woman’s death suspicious.
A widespread search by sea and land was initiated before the woman’s remains were located. She was part of a luxury voyage aboard the Coral Adventurer cruise ship and disappeared while exploring the surroundings. The woman was participating in a 60-day journey around Australia, with the cost of such trips estimated at around $80,000 (£39,000).
Mark Fifield, the head of Coral Expeditions, confirmed the “tragic death” of the passenger on Lizard Island in an official statement. The company is cooperating with authorities to assist in the ongoing investigation.
Fifield mentioned, “The crew alerted authorities about the missing woman, leading to a search and rescue mission both on land and at sea. Following the operation, Queensland Police informed Coral Expeditions that the woman had been found deceased on Lizard Island.”
“We deeply regret this incident and are fully supporting the woman’s family. Our team has been in touch with the family and will continue to provide assistance during this challenging time.”
“We are collaborating closely with Queensland Police and other relevant parties to aid in their inquiries. Further comments will be withheld until the investigation progresses.” Police have also indicated that a report is being prepared for the coroner.
According to a source cited by The Australian, the woman was hiking the challenging Cook’s Look trail on the island with a group when she needed to pause. Allegedly, the group proceeded without her.
Robyn Holmes, the Cook Shire Mayor, expressed condolences to the woman’s family, friends, and all those impacted by the tragedy. She acknowledged the distressing nature of the situation and commended the emergency services and agencies involved.
