“EE Customers Warned of Text Message Scam”

A recent surge in a text message scam targeting EE customers has raised concerns among users. The scam involves misleading messages prompting recipients to claim non-existent “EE reward points” before they expire. The messages lead users to a fake EE website designed to steal personal information and money. This scam has been increasingly reported in recent weeks.

Several EE customers have shared their experiences online to warn others about the scam. One user mentioned receiving a deceptive text regarding rewards and inadvertently clicking on a fraudulent link that resembled an authentic EE website. Another user admitted falling for the scam initially but quickly realized the deceit and closed the website.

Phonely, a cybersecurity firm, has observed a notable increase in scam reports related to fake EE messages on its scam-tracking platform “Who Called Me.” These messages are sent from random numbers impersonating EE, urging mobile users to be cautious of unsolicited messages offering rewards, prizes, or expiring benefits.

Bryn Thompson, Marketing Director at Phonely, emphasized the sophistication of these scam messages, advising individuals to refrain from clicking on links in unexpected texts. Thompson stressed the importance of verifying the authenticity of messages directly with mobile providers using official contact information.

EE has clarified that it does not operate a points or rewards program and has shared an example of the fraudulent message to help customers identify such scams. The company warned recipients to disregard messages offering rewards and avoid clicking on any links provided in suspicious texts.

The scam message falsely claims to offer points as a gift to high-quality users, directing them to a link to redeem prizes before the points expire. EE reiterated that this message is fraudulent and urged users to avoid clicking on unknown links, replying to the message, calling the provided number, or sharing personal or financial information.

To ensure security, recipients are advised to exercise caution when receiving messages regarding EE reward points and to refrain from engaging with suspicious links or disclosing personal information.
