“Duo’s Whistling Skills Shine in Global Competition”

Published:

A participant on the BBC quiz show “Only Connect” casually mentioned competing in an international whistling contest, sparking curiosity in graphic journalist Ben Shannon. Intrigued, Shannon signed up himself and his daughter, Sumire, for the Masters of Musical Whistling mailing list, initially viewing it as a lighthearted activity.

Both Shannon and Sumire possessed a knack for whistling, a skill passed down from generation to generation. When the opportunity arose to audition for the Masters of Musical Whistling, Shannon saw it as a fun bonding experience with his daughter. However, to his surprise, they were selected to participate in the competition held in Los Angeles.

Realizing the competition’s serious nature, Shannon sought guidance from Carole Anne Kaufman, known as the Whistling Diva. Kaufman critiqued their audition tapes, emphasizing the need to hone their skills for a live audience. Motivated by the challenge, Shannon and Sumire committed to daily practice sessions.

After intense training, the duo traveled to Hollywood for the competition. Surrounded by talented whistlers from around the globe, Shannon marveled at their artistry and dedication. Overcoming his past penchant for irony, Shannon and Sumire delivered captivating performances on stage.

Sumire impressed the audience with a rendition of the “Doraemon” theme, earning a silver medal in the kids’ category. Meanwhile, Shannon showcased his skills with “It’s Not a Moon” and clinched the gold in the level one adults’ category. Despite his initial reservations, Shannon found profound fulfillment in the experience, embracing the joy of wholehearted dedication.

The journey to the Masters of Musical Whistling competition not only showcased Shannon and Sumire’s talents but also underscored the transformative power of genuine passion and dedication.
