Devon and Torbay Expand Free School Meals Coverage

Published:

Thousands more children in Devon and Torbay will now receive free school meals automatically without the need for families to apply. The change will benefit approximately 1,300 pupils who were previously eligible but not receiving this support. Cornwall Council is also planning to implement automatic enrollment for free school meals, benefiting an additional 1,800 children starting in September 2026.

Eligibility for free school meals in the UK varies based on location, age, and household benefits. Children in England receive free school meals in reception, year 1, and year 2. Those claiming Universal Credit and earning under £7,400 annually, after tax and excluding benefits, currently qualify. However, this requirement is set to be removed in the academic year 2026/27, ensuring all children from families receiving Universal Credit will be eligible regardless of income.

Guidance from the Department for Education is expected before September 2026. In Scotland, primary one to primary five students receive free school meals, while all primary school pupils in Wales are eligible. In Northern Ireland, parents must apply for free school meals if they claim benefits. Private school students generally do not receive this benefit.

For children not automatically qualifying for free school meals, parents may apply if they claim specific benefits until the child turns 18. Additional aid such as grants for school uniforms and trips may also be available to those receiving free school meals.
