The inaugural Ontario Honda Dealers Indy event at Markham faced delays at the starting line. The first day of practice and qualifying for the only IndyCar race in Canada was called off on Friday due to incomplete track construction, preventing final safety checks. Organizers plan to accommodate the missed sessions on Saturday’s schedule.
This marks the first year that Markham is hosting the event, following its relocation from Toronto’s Exhibition Place, the event’s home since its inception in 1986. IndyCar president J. Douglas Boles expressed disappointment in a statement, citing the delayed track build despite extensive support from the on-site team.
Longtime race attendees Mark Coburn from Kitchener and Scott Stobo from Waterloo drove to Markham for the event, recognizing the importance of ensuring track safety. The last-minute cancellation affected the excitement for fans eagerly awaiting on-track action and attractions.
The decision to move the event from downtown Toronto to Markham was announced by IndyCar and the City of Markham in September. The new temporary circuit, constructed for the first time this week, spans Kennedy Road, Enterprise Boulevard, the Unionville GO tracks, and Highway 407.
The incomplete features included a pedestrian bridge over Enterprise Boulevard and safety fencing modifications for flag-waving marshals. Despite some skepticism about the venue choice, funding from the Ontario and federal governments and Markham’s capital spending underscored the significance of the event.
Friday’s activities at the IndyCar race were free, with donations encouraged for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The sunny weather drew thousands of spectators to the track, although the lack of shade and seating posed challenges compared to the previous venue at Exhibition Place.
Off-track events proceeded as scheduled on Friday, with Saturday set to be a packed day of practice sessions and qualifying rounds. The anticipation is high for a thrilling race on Sunday, with additional races scheduled for the weekend, including the USF2000 Championship and NASCAR Canada Series.
Despite the initial setbacks, organizers are optimistic about the event’s success once the action kicks off on the revamped circuit. Fans and participants alike are looking forward to an exciting weekend of racing in Markham.
