Residents of Regina have been spotting coyotes not just at the movie theatre but also in local parks. Scott Paton, who frequents Les Sherman Park with his dogs, encountered a coyote in mid-August. Paton described the coyote as more curious than aggressive, getting as close as 10 feet to him and his pets. Despite seeing coyote droppings in the area, Paton remains unconcerned, stating that coyotes are a common part of urban wildlife.
However, not all residents share Paton’s comfort level with coyotes in the Cathedral neighborhood. Numerous reports have surfaced on social media about coyote sightings in Les Sherman Park and Kiwanis Waterfall Park since August. Some posts detailed encounters where the coyotes approached and even chased people and their pets. Regina city Coun. David Froh also experienced a close encounter with a coyote during his morning run in Les Sherman Park.
Acknowledging the public safety risk posed by persistent coyote sightings, the City of Regina disclosed that they received reports of two coyotes in the area and are collaborating with provincial conservation officers to relocate the animals safely. Froh emphasized the importance of community safety and wildlife preservation, reassuring residents that the removal process will be conducted without harm to the animals or the public.
While coyote sightings can be concerning, Froh emphasized that such encounters are not uncommon in Regina, emphasizing the importance of coexisting with wildlife. He urged residents to report any sightings of potentially dangerous wild animals to the city authorities.
