“Convicted Double Murderer Chooses Firing Squad at Execution”

Published:

A convicted double murderer, Brad Keith Sigmon, who brutally killed his ex-girlfriend’s parents, made a chilling plea before facing his execution on death row. Sigmon, aged 67, was put to death by a firing squad in South Carolina, USA, following the gruesome murders. The incident occurred after Sigmon broke into the home of David and Gladys Larke in Greenville County. This heinous act took place after their daughter, Rebecca Barbare, ended her relationship with him. The Larke couple, who had been together for about three years, resided in a trailer park near their daughter’s home. Court records revealed that following a night of heavy drinking and drug use, Sigmon confided in a friend about his plan to seek revenge on Rebecca for leaving him and to harm her parents.

With a baseball bat in hand, Sigmon viciously assaulted both parents, striking each of them nine times on the head during the tragic events of 2001. The court was told that David suffered severe injuries, with his skull almost split in half. Subsequently, Sigmon stole David’s firearm and attempted to force Rebecca into a car, but she managed to escape as he fired shots in her direction.

After the brutal attack, Sigmon fled, leading to an 11-day manhunt that concluded in Tennessee. He was sentenced in 2002 and remained on death row until early March 2025 when he chose a firing squad over the electric chair due to his fear of being burned alive.

On the day of his execution, March 8, 2025, Sigmon was secured in a chair at the South Carolina Department of Corrections’ death chamber. His head was covered with a hood, a target was placed on his chest, and a barrier concealed the three volunteer riflemen positioned less than fifteen feet away. A basin was set up under the chair to collect any blood that might spill.

Moments before the shots were fired at 6:05 pm, Sigmon’s lawyer read his final words aloud. He expressed a message of love and called on fellow Christians to support the abolition of the death penalty, reflecting on his past ignorance and the need for divine grace and mercy. Three members of the Larke family, along with Sigmon’s spiritual adviser, were present to witness the execution. Following the shots, Sigmon’s chest moved several times, and .308 Winchester Tap Urban bullets were utilized in the execution, prompting ongoing debates among experts regarding the pain inflicted on the victims.
