Gianfranco Zola has taken on a unique role at Bethpage this week, as the Chelsea icon has agreed to be Francesco Molinari’s designated buggy driver during the upcoming Ryder Cup. The 57-year-old Zola was spotted among the front-row spectators in a team photo ahead of the prestigious golf event in New York, where he will now support Europe’s vice-captain from the driver’s seat.
According to Golf Digest, Zola, who formed a bond with Molinari during his time at West Ham, will be behind the wheel for the Italian golfer. Molinari, a West Ham supporter since his move to England in 2009, holds a special connection with Zola. The former football manager had a brief but memorable stint at West Ham, ending on a disappointing note after narrowly escaping relegation.
Despite his renowned football career, Zola has also dabbled in the world of golf, participating in various pro-ams on the DP World Tour. Notably, he joined forces with other ex-Premier League stars during the inauguration of a new golf course at Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeen.
During the Ryder Cup, Molinari will assist Team Europe’s captain, Luke Donald, in New York. Molinari expressed admiration for Donald’s leadership qualities and dedication to the team, emphasizing the challenge that lies ahead at Bethpage and his eagerness to contribute positively.
