Chaos within Reform’s administration in Kent has raised concerns for public safety, according to the Fire Brigades Union (FBU). Following Reform UK’s victory in the Kent County Council elections in May, nine councillors, including key fire authority members, have been suspended, leaving the fire service Chief Executive with limited spending authority. The FBU criticized the situation as a danger to public safety and labeled council leader Linden Kemkaran as “captain chaos.”
Despite requests for a meeting from local union representatives to address the issue, no response or meeting has been arranged by the council leadership. The situation escalated when Ms. Kemkaran, in a leaked video, dismissively told dissenting Reform UK colleagues to accept her decisions.
Steve Wright, the FBU general secretary, emphasized the critical impact of the governance breakdown on fire and rescue services, urging the council to take control. Joe Weir, FBU executive council member for the South East, highlighted the importance of effective political leadership for Kent firefighters’ safety and welfare.
The FBU continues to advocate for firefighters’ safety and public well-being amidst the ongoing governance challenges. Notably, a committee meeting in Kent discussing supported school transport for families was canceled due to the suspension of its chair. Kent County Council, with a substantial annual budget of £2.5 billion, faces significant disruptions due to the internal turmoil.
Ms. Kemkaran was contacted for comment on the situation.
