“Canadian Astronaut Jeremy Hansen Named Space Special Adviser”

Published:

Prime Minister Mark Carney has designated Jeremy Hansen as a special adviser on space, coinciding with the United States’ attention towards Canada’s shift in space partnerships to Europe. Expressing his enthusiasm for the role, Hansen shared his sentiments in a video posted on social media on Tuesday. He emphasized the abundant possibilities to utilize the current position to enhance Canadian sovereignty, security, quality of life, and global contributions.

Hansen mentioned that his responsibilities include providing advice to Carney and Industry Minister Mélanie Joly. Notably, in April, as part of the Artemis II mission, he and three other astronauts journeyed around the moon, surpassing previous human space explorations. Joly disclosed that Hansen proposed assisting the government in formulating a new space strategy after departing from the Canadian Space Agency.

Regarding Hansen’s role specifics, including the duration and compensation, inquiries directed to Carney and Joly’s offices remain unanswered. Furthermore, Defence Minister David McGuinty unveiled a $20-million agreement for the utilization of a space launch complex in southern Newfoundland, building on a prior arrangement involving a facility in Nova Scotia. This agreement aims to enable Canada to deploy crucial satellites into orbit even during global uncertainties or disruptions in foreign launch markets.

Hansen’s appointment aligns with Canada’s pursuit to expand collaboration with European nations in space, while the U.S. hints at exploring alternative partners for its space endeavors. U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra highlighted Canada’s decision to increase cooperation with the European Space Agency over SpaceX, signifying a shift away from the American firm. Hoekstra emphasized the U.S.’s inclination towards the private sector, emphasizing that competition fosters excellence in innovation.

Moreover, discussions at the SpaceBound 2026 Conference revealed differing perspectives on space cooperation between Canada and the U.S., particularly in the context of evolving defense strategies. Hoekstra expressed the U.S.’s readiness to continue airspace collaboration through NORAD, awaiting Canada’s stance amidst evolving geopolitical dynamics. He emphasized the importance of adapting to changes in the defense landscape to uphold national security interests effectively.
