“Canada Seeks Star for Eurovision Debut”

Published:

Canada has a single opportunity to create an impact in its first appearance at the Eurovision Song Contest. The country must decide whether to follow in the footsteps of Céline Dion’s success in 1988 with a heartfelt ballad and strong vocals or opt for a more unconventional approach, similar to Greece’s recent performance where Akylas dressed as a large orange cat in a video game-inspired act.

The chosen Canadian representative for this global stage will play a significant role in this decision-making process, with the performer selection portal now officially open for applicants. Although anyone can apply, CBC/Radio-Canada is seeking a performer with a proven track record, preferring experienced individuals.

Already, three potential competitors have emerged. Rêve, a Montreal native, secured the 2023 Juno Award for Dance Recording of the Year. Talk, who impressed at last year’s Canada Day concert, won the Juno for breakthrough artist of the year in 2024. Additionally, bbno$, a two-time Fan Choice Juno winner in 2025 and 2026, has also expressed interest.

To qualify for Eurovision, contestants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents aged 18 or older by May 1, 2027, capable of international travel and passing standard background checks. The application process requires submission of two videos: a live performance and a personal explanation of their love for Eurovision.

Participants must possess exceptional vocal skills and be ready to perform in both English and French. The song contest stipulates that all entries must include lyrics, ruling out songs in alien languages.

The selection process involves a shortlist of finalists determined by CBC/Radio-Canada after the application portal closes on September 9. Jennifer Dettman, the head of delegation for Eurovision Song Contest Canada, emphasized the importance of selecting individuals with a significant digital presence, stage comfort, vocal prowess, and an existing European fanbase.

Following a public vote online, combined with a jury vote, one artist will be chosen to represent Canada in Eurovision. Dettman anticipates the selection will be made before winter, kickstarting the journey towards the grand final in May.

The chosen artist will play a crucial role in crafting the final song, with outreach to established songwriters already underway. They will be heavily involved in the songwriting process, music video production, and performance preparation leading up to the Eurovision Grand Final, requiring dedication and prioritization.

Despite the workload, artists will receive fair compensation for their efforts, with the ultimate reward being the exposure gained from this prestigious international competition.
