A team of breast cancer survivors from Saskatoon is embarking on an international journey through dragon boat racing. The group known as Busting with Energy is set to compete in France against teams from various countries.
Kerry Neal, a member of the team, expressed the uplifting experience of being on the water with individuals who share similar past experiences. Having discovered the team during her chemotherapy sessions, Neal eagerly joined as soon as she felt better. The camaraderie within the group, comprising nearly 40 individuals who have faced similar challenges, has been a source of great support for her.
The team, humorously self-referred to as “the team no one wants to join,” exclusively welcomes those who have encountered a breast cancer diagnosis. Many members, including Neal, have found relief from lymphedema, a common side effect of breast cancer surgery, through their involvement in dragon boating. The physical activity aids in the rehabilitation of muscles and lymph nodes affected by breast cancer treatments.
The inception of breast cancer dragon boat teams traces back to 1996 when a medical group in Vancouver established the first team. Initially, it was believed that sports involving upper arm movements, like canoeing, should be limited for women who have undergone breast surgery. This misconception was debunked by the Vancouver team, leading to the global expansion of breast cancer dragon boating.
Anne Eagle, the president of the Busting with Energy team, emphasized the importance of the group in showcasing life beyond breast cancer treatments. Having been part of the team for six years following her own diagnosis 12 years ago, Eagle highlighted the strength and enduring connections fostered within the team.
The team’s journey to the 2026 IBCPC Participatory Dragon Boat Festival in France signifies a non-competitive gathering of around 4,500 breast cancer survivors worldwide. The event will witness the participation of over 320 teams, showcasing the growing prominence of breast cancer dragon boat racing both in Canada and internationally.
